Cultural Arts Partnership: Boys Will Be Boys Friday August 14 2020 at 8:00 PM
Friday August 14 2020
The complexities of American masculinity and boyhood come to the stage in a theatrical, vulnerable, and powerful world premiere dance evening presented by international Choreographer Randolph Ward.
Boys Will be Boys is an emotional charged evening that dissects toxic masculinity and American ideologies on manhood. Featuring a diverse and multicultural cast of 7 dancers including, Nataenal leal and Ryan DeAlexandro of Dimensions Dance Theater of Miami, alongside rising Opera star Angel Baritone, with 2 of Miami’s hottest B-Boys, Eagle and Christian Jules Olmtak.
In a “call and response” military style cadence, performers enter the theater space chanting and marching in formation. “Man up”, “boys don’t cry”, and “take it like a man”, can be heard and are vocalized by dancers as B-Boys, Eagle and Christian battle each other in the streets style of dance called “breaking”.
In his own words, choreographer Randolph Ward states, “this work takes inspiration from my own life as a young black gay male, growing up in Liberty City and studying classical ballet. The socialization of boys is one that fosters and normalizes violence. This evening peels back the mask of masculinity”.
