Juneteenth is a 155-year-old holiday celebrating the emancipation of African-Americans from slavery in the U.S. It is celebrated on June 19 (the name is a combination of the words “June” and “nineteenth”) because on that date in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger of the Union Army landed in Galveston, Texas and informed slaves that the Civil War had ended and slavery had been abolished.

Cultural Arts Partnership: Boys Will Be Boys Saturday July 10 2021 at 8:00 PM EDT

Sandrell Rivers Theater
× Fantasy Theatre Factory at the Sandrell Rivers Theater & International Choreographer Randolph Ward present CAP@SRT: ‘Boys Will Be Boys.’

**This event contains adult language & content. Viewer discretion advised. **

The complexities of American masculinity and boyhood come to the stage in a theatrical, vulnerable, and powerful world premiere dance evening presented by international Choreographer Randolph Ward.

Boys Will be Boys is an emotionally charged evening of dance that dissects and investigates the effects of toxic-masculinity on American boyhood. Featuring a multi-disciplined and diverse cast of four dancers, alongside one of Miami’s hottest Drag Artists, CC Glitzer. The evening showcases contemporary dance, tap, dance theater, drag, and vogue dance culture.

In a “call-and-response” military cadence, performers enter the theater space marching and chanting in formation. Themes such as Military indoctrination, fraternity culture, pack mentality, and fear of femininity begin to take shape and set the narrative for the evening. “Man up”, “Boys don’t cry”, and “take it like a man”, can be heard and are vocalized by performers.

In his own words, choreographer Randolph Ward states, “this work takes inspiration from my own life as a young black gay male, growing up in Liberty City and studying classical ballet. This work confronts a world dominated by masculine toxicity and explores the question: where is it safe for a man to express, to be gentle, to cry, to be seen? The socialization of boys is one that fosters and normalizes violence. This evening peels back the mask of masculinity”.

The performance runs 1 hour followed by a brief Q&A with Choreographer and Cast.

Random Questions with Larry Fields Tuesday August 3 2021 at 8:00 PM EDT

Sandrell Rivers Theater
× Random Questions with Larry Fields is FTF’s newest virtual program. Just as the title suggests the show is a fun, off-the-wall take on a talk show based around a series of rapid-fire random questions. Some of the questions are ridiculously off-the-wall (if you were a disease which one would you be?), some are like a Rorschach test (how old do you want to become?) others are designed for long-form answers (Tell us about a time you made a fool of yourself)—but they are all designed to bring out the fun side of our guests and to highlight their unique personalities through humor. The interview is in many ways like an improv game—it works best when the participants go with it (the “yes, and” approach), no matter how silly or vague the questions may be. For instance, if a question is vague, it works best for the guest to interpret it how they choose to interpret it, likewise, if a binary choice question is asked and both answers are terrible, it’s more fun for the guest to pick one choice than to say “none of them.” In that same spirit, all answers can be expounded upon at the guest’s whim—any question that prompts an anecdote is welcome—The show is fun and light. The questions are truly randomly selected before each show from a list of more than 220 random questions, ensuring that each night’s show is truly unique. The show is 30 minutes long and is broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube via remote interview (Zoom). Guests are all FTF alumni—both past and present, featuring performers, directors, designers, etc.—all the kinds of people who make FTF possible. This show is our way of celebrating our great and talented artists both on stage and off—and it’s a gig in the pandemic!
